This Isn't Normal
Trump's refusal to concede is both unprecedented and dangerous
Normally I would be presenting differing views from several new outlets on a pertinent political subject, but this is not worth pretending that any views supporting what Trump is doing is worth anyone's time or attention. The reality is that Donald Trump is doing potentially irreparable harm to our democracy by refusing to concede defeat and continuing to claim that President-elect Joe Biden's win was a result of widespread fraud.
Numerous articles from a plethora of news organizations have been written to bring attention to the danger and depravity of what Trump is doing, including articles from The Atlantic, The Economist, Vogue, National Geographic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and even Cleveland.com. The truth is that no modern president has ever refused to concede their loss, and Trump's baseless claims of voter fraud are sowing doubt in America's election system. He's also establishing norms where people can continually refuse to concede while claiming fraud and attempting to disenfranchise legal votes in order to secure victory.
A peaceful transition of power after acknowledging the results of a free and fair election are hallmarks of our democracy, and they should not be treated with such disdain. The fact that a majority of Republicans claim that the election wasn't free and fair is terrifying, and every single Republican elected official should be out there doing everything they can to remedy this dangerous lie that has taken hold. Instead most Republicans are either joining in on spreading misinformation (see my post about Sen. Rand Paul) or are staying quiet all together.
For those that hoped electing Biden would mean a return to normal, Trump and his supporter's actions is a reminder that we still have a lot of work and a long way to go before we're even close to normal again.
