False Claims of Fraud Could Bring Unintended Consequences

Could Trump's lies cause GA Republicans to stay home?
Newsmax, one of Trump's new favorite "news" organizations, reports on potential boycotts of the upcoming runoff Senate elections in Georgia. They cite Georgia attorney Lin Wood's statements that Republicans should withhold support for Collins and Loeffler until they show they're serious about working to uncover fraud in Georgia's election to help Trump secure victory. Apparently Georgia Republican voters that believe Trump's claims about voter fraud are reluctant to vote in an election they believe has already been decided.
The Republican establishment is worried it will
The Guardian reports on Republican officials' concern that Trump's claims will depress turnout in an extremely important election. This comes as Trump continues to attack the results of the election in Georgia, even resorting to attacking GA Secretary of State Raffensperger and and GA Governor Brian Kemp. Trump supporters, and Trump himself have even gone so far as to insinuate that Raffensperger is complicit in the fraud that handed Biden Georgia's Electoral College votes.
I'm left wondering how pervasive a problem this really is. Sure, Biden won a state that a Democrat hasn't won in 28 years, but no Democrat has ever won in a runoff election. Besides, Biden won largely thanks to suburban voters who voted for him and then still voted for Republicans down ballot. Georgia appears to be safely red, at least as far as these two races are concerned.
Hi Josh,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great point and I think Trump is going to burn the Republican party down on his way out of office. Many Republicans support their local leaders first, with federal leaders second. The case in Georgia with Brian Kemp, Trump publicly called him out and was backed by both Loeffler and Perdue. This not only creates divide on the local level but creates divide amongst the entire party itself. Trump might be to blame for not only his loss, but the loss of the senate. Only time will tell!
Great work!
